Being an automobile company, we realize that with the rising number of vehicles on the road, safety has become an issue of importance. By organizing a road safety programme to educate and raise awareness among the young children, we would be able to play a role in reducing the number of accidents/fatalities. It is our hope to educate young people, starting from preschool children on road safety, and over the years build a good foundation for future generations of responsible and safety conscious road users. UMW Toyota Motor fully supports the government's efforts in creating road safety awareness by collaborating with the government to increase awareness, knowledge and understanding of road safety. Thus, the Toyota Traffic Tots Programme is working closely with the Ministry of Transport and the preschool children nationwide. Toyota Traffic Tots is initiated to educate the children on how to become good pedestrians and good passengers. The module containing 10 lessons that cover this two (2) focus area will be taught for a total of one hour each month. The first 30 minutes will be used for the introduction of each lesson, while the remaining 30 minutes to be used to enhance the respective lesson. Teachers are required to use the teaching kit containing teaching modules provided by UMW Toyota Motor and to carry out the activities at the designated road safety corner. To gauge the children's understanding of the lessons taught, teachers are tasked to conduct a pre-survey before each lesson and submit a teaching reflection as well as a report upon completion of each lesson. To further sustain the programme, UMW Toyota Motor will organize a Road safety Lesson Plan Competition among the 10 selected Smart Reader Kids Centre. The centres are to upload a minimum of two lesson plans to our website and the most creative lesson plan will win a prize. We plan to carry out this programme for the next three years. 1st year we are targeting 10 centres - 300 children directly involved, 2nd year we are targeting 20 centres – and 3rd year we are targeting 20 centres. 2012 Toyota Traffic Tots will end in November, as the programme implementation will take place from March - November. Globally, Toyota has been participating in various road safety programs such as educating people, including drivers and pedestrians, and making proposals toward the creation of a safe traffic environment, in addition to making safe vehicles.
